childhood story

I was born in Nayarit, Mexico and moved to the states when I was seven years old. My memories as a child have always been a mix of the two countries. I was still so young when we moved here that it was hard for me to understand that we were in a totally different place. I was unable to pick one single story that was representative of all my early years. Instead I ended up sharing a series of stories that define who I am today, and that include Mexico as well as South Carolina. I have always felt this mix of cultures doesn’t inhibit me, but enriches my life and makes me embrace my bicultural upbringing. There is a photo that I love from my childhood, it was taken at the doorstep of my house in Mexico. I am wearing a white dress and looking straight at the camera with a very determined expression, almost as if I knew all the struggles I would have to face to get where I am today. I also remember learning to shoot a riffle for the first time with my dad. By shooting bulls-eyes, I learn how to stay focused on my target to achieve my goals.
